Tooth Powder...

What is it anyway?

Tooth powder is not revolutionary. The Romans, Greeks and Egyptians were using various formulations of ground bones, ash, myrrh and other dry ground ingredients to create tooth powders since 5000 BC. Simply put, a tooth powder is a combination of dry ingredients in powder form used to clean your teeth and often freshen your breath (note: much of your breath odour stems from the gut).

The ultimate goal is maintaining oral health. Since your mouth is a space that rapidly absorbs nutrients (or toxins!) due to the vast amount of capillaries, we’d prefer to be brushing with a blend of food grade ingredients that are derived from nature with antibacterial, polishing and pH balancing properties. These are the attributes of ōTH’s 100% Natural Tooth Powder. Our ingredients: Himalayan pink salt, baking soda (aluminum free), calcium carbonate, calcium bentonite clay, diatomaceous earth, organic Ceylon cinnamon, myrrh powder, organic Japanese peppermint essential oil. Check out our Tooth Powder Ingredients page for more info on each one.

Why choose powder over paste? Here are a couple facts for you to ponder: Toothpastes contain a slurry of unnecessary chemicals such as sodium lauryl & laureth sulfate (a foaming agent/detergent), triclosan, propylene glycol and artificial flavourings, to name a few; all of which are most certainly taking the fast track into your body via those capillaries mentioned above. Not so convinced? Try looking at your toothpaste ingredients…if you can find them!

Another equally compelling reason is that tooth powders have been found to be better than a paste at controlling plaque and gingivitis. This can be attributed to the gentle polishing action of the ingredients coupled with their natural antibacterial properties.

It’s your mouth, you get to decide.
